Built to Last: Don't Let Your Business Break You

 Small Business Month

City of Boston, serving 40,000+ small businesses

The Challenge

Small Business Month programming tends to look the same everywhere: capital access, marketing tactics, procurement walkthroughs. All useful. All aimed at the business  and none of it aimed at the person running it.

The agency serves more than 40,000 small businesses and knows the harder problem its constituents were facing. Owners were financially strained, permanently on call, and depleting faster than their businesses were growing. Women owners in particular were carrying the operating load and the household load at once.

The agency needed programming that named this directly and a facilitator who could hold that conversation with real rigor, without turning it into therapy or a set of wellness platitudes.

What We Delivered

Built to Last: Don't Let Your Business Break You is a working session built on a single premise: the most important driver of business success is the entrepreneur, and most entrepreneurs are running that asset into the ground.

The session moved past surface-level stress tips into three areas owners rarely get structured help with:

Rebuild the relationship with money and financial stress How financial pressure distorts decision-making, and how to make sound calls under it rather than reacting to it.

Navigate stress that cannot be controlled Practical capacity for the conditions owners can't fix such as supply costs, slow seasons, and staffing gaps.

Create boundaries that protect peace and energy Moving off constant availability without losing customers, contracts, or credibility.

The session was designed for owners who feel stretched thin but cannot slowdown, who feel pressure to be constantly available, who want growth that doesn't cost them their health and who intend to still be standing alongside the business they built.

Two formats, one standard

The agency's constituency is geographically and logistically diverse. A single delivery format would have excluded a meaningful share of it. So the program ran twice, in two modalities.

In person, at The Sacred Rose Center. A smaller cohort in a dedicated space, with the room-level candor that only comes from being face to face. Owners spoke openly about financial fear in front of peers a conversation that rarely happens at a business event.

Live and virtual. The same full curriculum, delivered to owners for whom travel, childcare, or storefront coverage would have been a barrier to attending anything at all.

Neither session was an abbreviated version of the other. Both delivered the complete framework, with facilitation adapted to the medium rather than the content cut down to fit it.

Results

The result is a session that is emotionally honest and operationally serious at the same time. Owners left with language for what they were experiencing and with decisions they could execute the same week. Dozens of small business owners registered across both sessions and attendees reported they would change a specific business practice as a result
